Why are employees of movie theaters excempt from overtime?

Federal law, and most states, require workers at movie theaters to receive minimum wage, but not overtime. Why are movie theaters excempt from overtime pay? I am curious as to the historic reason they were originally exempted from overtime provisions of FLSA. I do not work in a movie theater, just curious.

Public Comments

  1. Usually, the workers hired are underage students working part time, and the law protects them from being taken advantage of.
  2. Because someone somewhere lobbied the government and convinced them movie theaters would not be able to operate if their employees were allowed to collect overtime monies. It's the law. The best thing to do is to contact your US congressmen and women and ask them to pass legislation to change that.
