Santa Fe Home Upkeep? I've heard that Santa Fe Homes require more upkeep than a traditional home? Is this true? How much more would one cost than the other? I heard the roof is especially an issue on a Santa Fe? Any comments would be appreciated! Also, Standard Pacific would be building it so any comments on the builders themselves would be great! Thanks!

What is the best way to promote & sell a new crisp/snack product on a very low cost budget? These crisps are common in the Pacific Islands and are made from local fruit and vegetables. Initially they can be made at home and contained in plain packaging. But how do you go about getting them into a supermarket chain? Would they need approved packaging and be required to meet any production standards?

So Who was in the wrong me or my cousin (and aunt)? Yesterday my cousin came over last minute and asked me to babysit her little sister so she could attend a party this was around 3pm pacific standard time she said she's be back at 11:00pm she paid me ten dollars to do this, I happily accepted, 10:50 rolls around and she hasn't given me a call so I decide to call her and ask her where she is she said she's still at the party, I said no rush try to come home before two a.m if you can. 1:30 am the baby falls asleep and I call her to see where she is, I tell her not to rush home because the baby is asleep and if she needs a ride then I'll give her one. I leave the baby with my mom for a few minutes to go get my mother and I a beverage in that time my cousin returns to the house and storms off with the baby back to her house which is around the block mind you. Then my aunt calls me this morning (she's not the mother of anyone involved) and asks me where the baby is I tell her that my cousin had picked her up in the early morning and she starts interrogating me like I did something wrong. Mind you I have work later on that day and I have to wash cloths for the week and commute 2+ hours to get to work. So was it wrong of me to ask my cousin where she was and or to expect her to return in a timely fashion? Yeah I definitely think I will I get paid on Wednesday though :)
Any suggestions for my unemployment appeal court hearing is tomorrow...any suggestions? I filed unemployment back in Feb after i was laid off. I was denied because I was currently a part time student, and they stated that I was unable to accept or be available for work. I filed an appeal and its now tomorrow (today) at 10am pacific standard time. I am a little nervous as I dont know what to do or say. I was no longer a student as of mid-Feb as that is when I finished my last quarter. On the application it stated to note if you are plan on starting any new education or training and to give the dates. I put, as i thought it woldn't matter that I was currently a student part time, as I was. They denied and I applied a second time and both times they put the wrong phone number on my mail letter for my interview date, so both times I couldn't explain and was denied. What are the chances of getting approved. I have not started any new classes or anything else. The letter they sent me asks me to bring witnesses or evidence, What should I bring? Evidence? Like what, a video tape of me sitting on my butt for three months at home? What should I say to the judge. The appeal is to examine as they put it, Has the claimant been able to work and is available to work? LET ME KNOW < I NEED THE MONEY!

I found this on the internett about Frankie Valli's death? Is this a rummor and a Typo as i see Feb 4, 2011? Frankie returned to California permanently later that year, determined to reinvigorate his career. He had gained 30 pounds over a two-month stay in [[New York]], and the sudden weight gain (much of which was the result of intravenous feeding) further strained his heart, which was already weak from years of crash dieting. At the height of his illness, Frankie, who had a normal thyroid, was taking ten times the normal daily dose of thyroid replacement medication (equivalent to 1 milligram, as opposed to the normal 100 microgram dose), in order to speed up his metabolism. This, combined with heavy doses of [[laxatives]], weakened his heart and digestive and nervous systems even further. On February 4, 2011, Valli experienced heart failure at his home in Downey, [[California]], and was taken to Downey Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead twenty minutes later. He suffered cardiac arrest at 9:51 AM Pacific Standard Time. The LA coroner gave the cause of death as "heartbeat irregularities brought on by chemical imbalances associated with anorexia nervosa." The autopsy stated that Valli's death was the result of emetine cardiotoxicity due to anorexia nervosa. Under the anatomical summary, the first item was heart failure, with anorexia as second. The third finding was cachexia, which is extremely low weight and weakness and general body decline associated with chronic disease. Emetine cardio toxicity implies that Valli abused maple syrup, an easily obtained sugary topping that is only meant to be taken by persons who have swallowed [[pancakes]]. A documentary in the 2020s quoting medical sources and those in his immediate circle asserted that Frankie Valli had actually died from "recovering" from anorexia—he was recovering from the disease but his quick weight gain placed enormous pressure on his heart, which had been weakened by years of malnutrition.

Upgrade electrical service to 200 amp? My 30 year old home has a Federal Pacific breaker panel with 150 amp service. Our 2100 s.f. house has a lot of electrical appliances: washer, dryer, refrigerator, upright freezer, large screen tv with surround sound system, 2 dvr's, 3 vcr's, a number of small kitchen appliances, 3 computers, 3 printers and a pool pump, & a 4 ton heat pump ac to name a few items. Our existing panel handles the load, but there is no room for additional breakers. Another motivator to replace the panel is Federal Pacific panels have been known to catch fire. My electrician doubts that we use anywhere near 150 amps at a time and recommends replacing with a 150 amp Siemens panel for about $650. I was thinking of moving to the current residential standard: 200 amp - cost about $1350. Any qualified electricians out there wish to comment/recommend? Thank you.

Cost of replacing a fuse box with a circuit breaker box? Any advantages/disadvantages? Is it worth it? I've got a 3-family home which was built in 1948. It is two and one half stories. The basement is unfinished, and the attic is finished, which is where the 3rd floor apartment is. It is my assumption that the house was converted to a 3 family from a 2 family decades ago. The first and second floors have their identical 100-amp Federal Pacific fuse boxes which are original to the house. The 3rd floor has a much smaller panel, about half the size, but it is a Federal Pacific circuit breaker panel which was installed in 1955 or so.. It is also 100 amp. The wiring on all three floors is the old standard non-pvc insulated, two-wire conductors, which is in good shape. I haven't had any problems with overloading circuits and blowing fuses, even with window AC units installed in the summers. Hot Water and Heating are gas & oil, and the 1st and 2nd floors have electric stoves & dryers. In the fuse boxes, there are stab-in units for the 240v appliances. Everything else is on two or three "House" fuses. Nothing is really separate, which is what I don't like. I've also heard that the early Federal Pacific circuit breakers like mine are prone to melting/overheating and failure. My question is: Should I think about replacing my fuse boxes and circuit breaker box with newer circuit breaker boxes, or should I be fine? Is it possible (not against code) to keep the current non-grounded 2-conductor wiring with new circuit breaker boxes? If I keep my original fuse boxes, can receptacles that should provide ground (computer surge protector, refrigerator, etc.) be grounded individually to a cold water pipe. I understand I can just replace 2-wire receptacles with GFCIs, but there's no equipment ground provided, which surge protectors need to operate correctly. What's my best bet? Will this computer work? Please take a look.? This is a cross - post. However, I also wanted it under a general computer topic. Hopefully with that in mind you will leave it stay. :) Right now I am running Warcraft on a : Amd Athalon x2 D core processor 4000 Vista(Ya, I know vista eats about 500mb ram) 1 gig ram lowest end factory ram Geforce 5800(something like that 256 ram I believe) 250mb Hard drive and 2 working and 2 broken USB ports. The only use of the computer is to run WoW. I understand this is not a good 'rig'. Although I do have issues I can still box(run 2 accounts at the same time) and have issues I can tolerate - it works!! I am 95% satisfied with it's performance 90% of the time!!!!! I am able to get the below system. I am not seeking advice on price or where I should get a new computer. Nor can I swap out out the AMD. Just not an options. I am seeking general critique(from all please) on the components. I am also curious if the mother board is a decent match with the chip, video card and ram. Should this be a machine that will be able to run WoW for the next 12 months with little issue? This machine will be a tremendous upgrade from what I currently have, correct? Consider the fact I am happy with what I have now before rushing to an answer that. Before this is dropped off on the back step minor tweaks can be made. It will be a very BIG hassle, VERY big(but is possible if something needs addressed). With that in mind and the fact this machine will be hooked into a dlink router, into the network(professional install) then hooked up to an 8-12 meg DSL line. . . It will just be used for 1 purpose - WoW(Warcraft online game). The setup below will should work 50 - 100 times better than the current rig(described above) with more satisfying results right? ALSO since you read this far, thank you, is this machine overkill? After 12 months my intention will be to yard sale it for best offer Specs: Extra Case Fan: Maximum 120MM Case Cooling Fans for your selected case POWER SUPPLY Upgrade: 800 Watts Power Supplies (CyberPowerPC XF800S Performance ATX 2.0 Power - Quad SLI Ready) CPU: AMD Phenom™II X4 965 Black Edition Quad-Core CPU w/ HyperTransport Technology COOLING FAN : Thermaltake V1 Gaming CPU Cooling Fan (Excellent Overclocking + Silent Proof + Smart CPU & System Thermal Monitor)(Venom Boost Pro OC Certified) MOTHERBOARD: Asus M3N72-D AMD 750a SLI Chipset DDR2/1066 SATA PCI-Express MBoard w/Video, GbLAN, USB2.0, &7.1Audio MEMORY: 4GB (2GBx2) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory (Kingston HyperX) VIDEO CARD: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1GB 16X PCI Express (Major Brand Powered by NVIDIA) Game Battle Stations ** Pacific ** SLI/CrossFireX Gaming Mode Supports Single Monitor HARD DRIVE: Single Hard Drive (500GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM HDD) USB PORTABLE DRIVE: USB 2.0 Portable Flash Drive (8GB) Optical Drive: LG 22X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW Dual Layer Drive SOUND: HIGH DEFINITION ON-BOARD 7.1 AUDIO NETWORK: Onboard Gigabit LAN Network USB Bluetooth 2.X EDR Dongle with Led Light Thumb Size Flash Media Reader/Writer: INTERNAL 12in1 Flash Media Reader/Writer USB PORT:External USB 2.0 Hub (4x USB 2.0 Ports) (BLACK Color IR-4100-BK) Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium w/ Service Pack 1 (64-bit Edition) Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon: (Free Upgrade coupon with purchasing of Vista Home Premium) Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit Edition) (Halo 2) Game I was told in comparison to my 1 gig amd 64 dual core machine the improvement with this machine should be jaw dropping. Should cap and trade alarmists take a note from Art Rosenfeld's book? Art Rosenfeld is retiring as a California Energy Commissioner at the age of 83. He's an energy efficiency visionary who played the biggest role in making California the most energy efficient state in the USA, using roughly the same enery per capita today as we did 30 years ago. The rest of the country's energy consumption has increased 40% over that period. "New homes and buildings were required to be better insulated and fitted with energy-wise lighting, heating and cooling systems. Appliances had to be designed to use less power. Utilities were forced to motivate their customers to use less electricity. The principle, Rosenfeld said, was simple: Conserving energy is cheaper and smarter than building power plants. Not surprisingly, those rules were attacked by business groups as bureaucratic job killers. Rosenfeld, who received his doctorate from the University of Chicago, was called unqualified by critics at Pacific Gas & Electric Co., one of California’s largest utilities. Yet these mandates have yielded about $30 billion annually in energy savings for California consumers. They’ve eliminated air pollution that’s the equivalent of taking 100 million cars off the roads. They have been copied by states and countries worldwide." "New [television] efficiency mandates go into effect Jan. 1, 2011, and become more stringent two years later. They’re expected to save Californians $8 billion in energy costs over a decade. Some TV makers weren’t happy. Rosenfeld wasn’t surprised. “The first time we put standards on a product, we tend to get objections that this will be the ruin of civilization as we know it,” he mused. “But then people get used to it.” http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-rosenfeld11-2010jan11,0,2961914,full.story This reminds me of carbon cap and trade alarmists, who say this system will destroy the economy even though economic studies have shown it will have a minimal economic impact. Then they attack the scientists. Everyone says these sorts of policies will cost too much, then they're implemented and the alarmists are proven wrong. The same thing happened with CFCs and sulfur emissions when they were regulated. What do you think - should cap and trade alarmists take a note from Art Rosenfeld's book? Eric, increasing efficiency is far cheaper than having to build new power plants to meet rising energy demand. Certain individuals love to talk about how we need to build more nuclear power plants. Increasing energy efficiency is an order of magnitude cheaper. Oh and by the way, many hybrids pay for the added up-front cost in just a few years. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2008/05/hybrids-taking.html

Should the President set up an independent panel to investigate global warming? Open letter to President Barack Obama from Adm. James A. Lyons, Jr., USN (Ret.)
Chairman
, Former Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet: [QUOTE]: "" Dear Mr. President, I am writing you ahead of your State of the Union address to caution you against drawing premature conclusions about the national security implications of climate change and cap-and-trade legislation. Media reports indicate that you may frame climate change as a national security issue to prod Congress into passing cap-and-trade legislation, like the Waxman-Markey bill that passed the House last June. But recent developments underscore the danger of such action. During 2009, much testimony was heard in the Senate about how Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035 leading to regional freshwater shortages that could destabilize the relationship between India and Pakistan. This concern was originally given credence by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 2007 assessment of the science. Sen. John Kerry, in his comments and speeches last year, noted how this region is home to Al Qaeda. But just last week, the IPCC issued what has been called an unprecedented apology for including the Himalayan glacier claim in its report. The IPCC said that the Himalayan glacier claim was "poorly substantiated" and the claim was made in violation of "the clear and well-established standards of evidence, required by the IPCC procedures." In addition to the Himalayan glacier controversy, investigations by the IPCC, University of East Anglia and Penn State University are still ongoing into the so-called Climategate scandal, in which thousands of e-mails between senior IPCC scientists have given rise to concerns about inappropriate data manipulation and censoring of opposing scientific views with respect to climate change. In addition to these significant controversies related to the science underpinning concerns about climate change, it is also important to consider how climate change policies will impact the military. To the extent, for example, that the national response to climate change makes energy more expensive and less available, and distracts the military and national security agencies from their core mission of keeping America safe, it could very well be that the true threat to national security is not climate change, but our response to it. According to studies by the Congressional Budget Office and others, Cap and Trade legislation could force U.S. energy producers to close facilities and cut production to comply with its mandates. Foreign energy producers would not believe their good fortune as they would only stand to benefit from such action. Mr. President, I recommend that you consider establishing an independent commission of military and national security experts to examine the implications of climate change and related policies to national security. It is too important an issue to be driven by unsubstantiated claims, tainted by scandal and to result in counterproductive policies."" --------------------------------------- What do you think? . http://www.centerforsecuritypolicy.org/p18296.xml?genre_id=

race and ethnicity id form, kids brought home from school? On friday, both my children brought home a form from school that I am to fill out. I have no problems filling it out. However, I was wondering if anyone else had the same questions I do regarding this form. It is called a race and ethnicity id form. I filled out something similar when I enrolled my children in school. Back then, there was a box that could be checked if the parent rather not release that information. It was also anonymous back then. This form however,, has my childrens' name in all caps, bold print at the top of the form along with their student id number. It indicates that this form is required and if it is not filled out, an appointed rep from the school district will do it for the parent. There are 3 spaces for signatures on the bottom. line 1 is if the student fills it out, line 2 is if the parent or guardian fills it out, line 3 is if an observer identified the child listed on the form and determined their ethnic backround. There are 2 parts to the form. Part one asks ARE YOU HISPANIC OR LATINO? check yes or no Part 2 has 5 races and you put an x on the appropriate one (you can select more than one) a-american indian or alaska native b-asian c-black or african american d-native hawaiian or other pacific islander e-white In the instructions, it states that it is something that simply reflects the growing diversity within the public schools. I have no problem with the form and have already filled it out. lol you can look at my children and tell that they are white. However, I have talked to parents who do have a problem with this form and don't understand why it is such a big deal. Do the schools get awarded more money if they have children associated with groups of minority? Are the student achievement test score standards fine tuned according to the ethnically diverse population of the state? Is this big brother keeping tabs on the kids? LOL These are all concerns that i've heard and would love to hear what others think! Note. Again, I did not post this because I have a problem with it nor do I have any issues with a particular race....I determine whether or not I like someone based on who they are as humans. So, please no racist comments here...no need for them!

Mine looked brand spanking new. Very fast, the battery does last only 1 1/2 hours, but I got an extra battery for $65 on eBay used and it works nicely. Came with Vista, but I put WinXP on mine and found all the drivers on the internet. The construction is very sturdy hard plastic, none of the cheap flimsy stuff. Overall the value is great, it feels and looks more durable than laptops of the past, and is fast. Great buy. REVIEW BY: Rick M. Reviewed Aug 07, 2008 I bought this laptop a week ago.and received it Wednesday. Excellent condition, I would have thougt I just picked it up at a store. My only problem was when I allowed Norton Internet Security to load (60 day trial)and then brought up the internet, half way through loading, the system locked up. The only way to free it up was to manualy power down. I unistalled Norton and installed AVG Free. NO more problems !!!! This is a very fast easy to use laptop with all the bells and whistles. Also very fast shipping,3 days. VERY HAPPY REVIEW BY: fraqtured Reviewed Aug 06, 2008 i bought the T1625 which is essentially the same specs as this, and wanted to input the impression i drew from the t1625. first off, great price, amazing features, and with a laptop cooler running $40 dollars for a middle of the road model, this laptop will run cool [the only complaint i have found on these was the heat] and you will have picked yourself up a top with features running in some cases nearly twice as much in price of a non refurbs, which will only be the refurbs of tomorrow. run all the updates through gateway, and do a clean reinstall and pertition reformat when you unpack, it, it will take a little bit of time, but will point you in a much faster direction. this laptop is highly recomended in my opinion. REVIEW BY: Reviewed Aug 05, 2008 This is my first purchase from TD.com, and I'm very satisfied with it. The Turion 64 dualcore processor and the 2GB of RAM make short work of everything I throw at it; I have Pidgin (my IM client), Firefox (with 3 tabs open, including YouTube), LimeWire, and uTorrent all running at the same time and there is absolutely no slowdown whatsoever. My only gripes are that it gets a little bit hot when charging, and the battery only lasts for an hour and a half; I can deal with heat and the battery can be easily upgraded. The only thing you have to worry about with refurbished products is the look, not performance; Mine came with a small scratch in the top of the case, but performs like a champ. If you don't mind some minor cosmetic flaws, I'd definitely recommend this computer to anyone on a budget, especially at this price! Your computer uses memory to run your Operating System, applications, peripherals, and to generate and display graphics on your computer monitor. Video memory is a form of RAM, and is either built into your motherboard; or on a graphics card (video card). Depending on the motherboard's configuration, and that of the video card (if separate or built-in to the motherboard), your computer may have to draw on its own RAM memory to meet its video memory needs. This creates shared memory, where your computer’s RAM will be shared between its own Processor (CPU) and its graphics chip. The result is that some systems will have shared memory, some will not. If you have 2GB (for example) of system memory installed, you may notice that your system reports significantly less memory. This is because your system is using shared memory for your video. What can you do about this? You can actually configure this shared memory through your computer’s BIOS settings. However, this is a setting best left alone, since it is typically optimized for display performance, and making changes may impact display resolutions, and other video capabilities. The simplest solution is usually to either: increase your system memory; or to upgrade the video hardware. By upgrading to a new video card with built-in video memory, then turning off shared memory, you will free your system to use it's maximum potential memory, and provide your system with much more robust video features. When you look at the specifications for a computer, it will display the installed memory, and typically the maximum memory that can be installed. However, while these are real values, they represent a potential useable memory. The actual useable memory may be different from these values. The reason is simply that a computer may configured to use shared memory, which reduces the amount of RAM that is available to the CPU by using some of it for other purposes, such as for video memory. In some cases, you can control the maximum useable memory through system settings, and by upgrading to a video card that has internal onboard video memory. But always remember, that the amount of memory that your system reports, is not always the amount of actual installed memory. Anyone intrested in writing a two page summary of this? FIBER KEEPS ITS PROMISE BY GEORGE GILDER "Today, I await the death of television, telephony, VCRs, and analog cameras with utter confidence as Moore's law unfolds." Rupert Murdoch, Ted Turner, John Malone, are you listening?" Get ready. Bandwidth will triple each year for the next 25, creating trillions in new wealth. Editor's note: Four years ago, Forbes ASAP published its first issue with a stunning prophecy by contributing editor George Gilder. Fiber optics, said George, had the potential to carry 25 trillion bits per second down a single strand. This represented a ten-thousandfold leap in carrying capacity over the 2.5 billion bits "barrier" long assumed by most experts in the field. What did George see that others had missed? One, a little-recognized (at the time) breakthrough called an erbium-doped amplifier, which keeps optical signals pure and strong over long distances. The other was a deep technical shift, with roots in the 1940s-era work of information theory pioneer Claude Shannon. If you believed Shannon, his logic dictated a new messaging scheme called wave division multiplexing. Though scorned by the experts four years ago, WDM now is emerging as the winner George had prophesied. The real winners will be all of us, as the coming world of cheap, unlimited bandwidth unfolds and at last fulfills the true potential of the information age. Here is George with an update. IMAGINE THAT IN 1975 YOU KNEW that Moore's law--the Intel chairman's projection of the doubling of the number of transistors on a microchip every 18 months--would hold for the rest of your lifetime. What if you knew that these transistors would run cooler, faster, better, and cheaper as they got smaller and were crammed more closely together? Suppose you knew the law of the microcosm: that the cost-effectiveness of any number of "n" transistors on a single silicon sliver would rise by the square of the increase in "n." As an investor knowing this Moore's law trajectory, you would have been able to predict and exploit a long series of developments: the emergence of the PC; its dominance over all other computer form factors; the success of companies making chips, disk drives, peripherals, and software for this machine. With a slight effort of intellect, you could have extended the insight and prophesied the digitization of watches, records (CDs), cellular phones, cameras, TVs, broadcast satellites, and other devices that can use miniaturized computer power. If you did not know precisely when each of these benisons would flourish, you would have known that each one was essentially inevitable. To calculate approximate dates, you had only to guess the product's optimal price of popularization and then match its need for mips (millions of instructions per second) of computer power with the cost of those mips as defined by Moore's law. Merely by using this technique of Moore's law matching--and holding to it with unshakable conviction for nearly 20 years--I became known as a "futurist." Today I await the death of television, telephony, VCRs, and analog cameras with utter confidence as Moore's law unfolds. You can tell me about the 98% penetration of TVs in American homes, the continuing popularity of couch-potato entertainments, the effectiveness of broadcast advertising, and the profound and unbridgeable chasm between the office appliance and the living-room tube. But I will pay no attention. Just you wait--Jack Welch, Ted Turner, Rupert Murdoch, John Malone, and David Jennings--the TV will die and you may be too late for the Net. It is now 1997, and a stream of dramatic events certifies that another law, as powerful and fateful and inexorable as Moore's, is gaining a similar sway over the future of technology. It is what I have termed the law of the telecosm. Its physical base lies in the same quantum realm of eigenstates and band gaps that governs the performance of transistors and also makes photons leap and lase. But the telecosm reaches beyond components to systems, combining the science of the electromagnetic spectrum with Claude Shannon's information theory. In essence, as frequencies rise and wavelengths drop, digital performance improves exponentially. Bandwidth rises, power usage sinks, antenna size shrinks, interference collapses, error rates plummet. The law of the telecosm ordains that the total bandwidth of communications systems will triple every year for the next 25 years. As communicators move up-spectrum, they can use bandwidth as a substitute for power, memory, and switching. This results in far cheaper and more efficient systems. In 1996, the new fiber paradigm emerged in full force. Parallel communications in all-optical networks became the dominant source of new bandwidth in telecom. Like Moore's law, the law of the telecosm will reshape the entire world of information technology. It defines the direction of technological advance, the vectors of growth, the sweet spots for finance. AMERICA'S DARK SECRET FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, American companies have been laying optical fiber strands at a pace of some 4,000 miles a day, for a total of more than 25 million strand miles. Five years ago, the top 10% of U.S. homes and businesses were, on average, a thousand households away from a fiber node; now they are a hundred households away. However, the imperial advance of this technology conceals a dark secret, which has led to a pervasive underestimation of the long-term impact of photonics. Sixty percent of the fiber remains "dark" (unused for communications) and even the leading-edge "lit" fiber is being used at less than one ten-thousandth of its intrinsic capacity. This problem has prompted leaders in the industry, from Bill Gates and Andy Grove to Bob Metcalfe and Mitch Kapor, to underrate drastically the impact of fiber optics. Restricting the speed and cost-effectiveness of fiber has been an electronic bottleneck and a regulatory noose. In order for the signal to be amplified, regenerated, or switched, the light pulses had to be transformed into electronic pulses by optoelectronic converters. For all the talk of the speed of light, fiber-optic systems therefore could pass bits no faster than the switching speed of transistors, which tops out at a cycle time of between 2.5 and 10 gigahertz. Meanwhile, telecom companies could not deploy new low-cost fiber products any faster than the switching speed of politicians and regulators, which tops out roughly at a cycle time of between 2.5 years and a rate of evolution measurable only by means of carbon 14. Nonetheless, the intrinsic capacity of every fiber line is not 2.5 gigahertz. Nor is it even 25 gigahertz, which is roughly the capacity of all the frequencies commonly used in the air, from AM radio to kA band satellite. The intrinsic capacity of every fiber thread, as thin as a human hair, is at the least one thousand times the capacity of what we call the "air." One thread could carry all the calls in America on the peak moment of Mother's Day. One fiber thread could carry 25 times more bits than last year's average traffic load of all the world's communications networks put together: an estimated terabit (trillion bits) a second. Over the last five years, technological breakthroughs and legislative loopholes have begun to open up this immense capacity to possible use. Following concepts pioneered and patented by David Payne at the University of Southampton in England, a Bell Laboratories group led by Emmanuel Desurvire and Randy Giles developed a workable all-optical device. They showed that a short stretch of fiber doped with erbium, a rare earth mineral, and excited by a cheap laser diode can function as a powerful amplifier over fully 4,500 gigahertz of the 25,000 gigahertz span. Introduced by Pirelli of Italy and popularized by Ciena Corporation of Savage, Maryland, and by Lucent and Alcatel, today such photonic amplifiers are a practical reality. Put in packages between two and three cubic inches in size, the erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) fit anywhere in an optical network for enhancing signals without electronics. This invention overcame the most fundamental disadvantage of optical networks compared to electronic networks. You can tap into an electronic network as often as desired without eroding the voltage signal. Although resistance and capacitance will leach away the current, there are no splitting losses in a voltage divider. Photonic signals, by contrast, suffer splitting losses every time they are tapped; they lose photons until eventually there are none left. The cheap and compact all-optical amplifier solves this problem. It is an invention comparable in importance to the integrated circuit. Just as the integrated circuit made it possible to put an entire computer system on a single sliver of silicon, the all-optical amplifier makes it possible to put an entire system on a seamless seine of silica--glass. Unleashing the law of the telecosm, it makes possible a new global economy of bandwidth abundance. Five years ago when I first celebrated the radical implications of erbium-doped amplifiers, skepticism reigned. I was summoned to Bellcore, where the first optical networks had been built and then abandoned, to learn the acute limits of the technology from Charles Brackett and his team. I had offered the vision of a broadband fibersphere--a worldwide web of glass and light--where computer users could tune into favored frequencies as readily as radios tune into frequencies in the atmosphere today. But Brackett and other Bellcore experts told me that my basic assumption was false. It was no simpler, they said, to tune into one of scores of frequencies on a fiber than to select time slots in a time-division-multiplexed (TDM) bitstream. Indeed, electronic switching technology was moving faster than optical technology. In the face of the momentum and installed base of electronic switching and multiplexing, the fibersphere with hundreds of tunable frequencies would remain a fantasy, like Ted Nelson's Xanadu. In 1997 the fantasy is coming true around the world. Xanadu has become the World Wide Web. The erbium-doped fiber amplifier is an explosively growing $250 million business. Electronic TDM seems to have topped out at 2.5 gigabits a second. TDM gear has suffered a series of delays and nagging defects and so far has failed in the market. Electronic TDM failed not only because it pushed the envelope of electronics but also because it violated the new paradigm. In single-mode fiber, the two key impediments are nonlinearities in the glass and chromatic dispersion (the blurring of bit pulses because even in a single band different frequencies move at different speeds). Chromatic dispersion increases by the square of the bit rate, and the impact of nonlinearities rises with the power of the signal. High-powered, high-bit-rate TDM flunked both telecosm tests. By contrast, wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) follows the laws of the telecosm; it succeeds by wasting bandwidth and stinting on power. WDM takes some 33% more bandwidth per bit than TDM, but it reduces power to combat nonlinearity and divides the bitstream into multiple frequencies in order to combat dispersion. Thus it can extend the distance or increase capacity by a factor of four or more today and can lay the foundations for the fibersphere tomorrow. In 1996 the new fiber paradigm emerged in full force. Parallel communications in all-optical networks, long depicted as a broadband pipe dream, crushed all competitors and became the dominant source of new bandwidth in the world telecom network. The year began with a trifold explosion at the Conference on Optical Fiber Communication in San Jose when three companies--Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs, NTT Labs, and Fujitsu--all announced terabit-per-second WDM transmissions down a single fiber. Sprint confirmed the significance of the laboratory breakthroughs by announcing deployment of Ciena's MultiWave 1600 WDM system, so called because it can increase the capacity of a single fiber thread by 1,600%. The revolution continues in 1997. At the beginning of January, NEC declared that by increasing the number of bits per hertz from one to three, it had raised the laboratory WDM record to three terabits per second. During 1996, MCI had increased the speed of its Internet backbone by a factor of 25, from 45 megabits a second to 1.2 gigabits. On January 6, Fred Briggs, chief engineering officer at MCI, announced that his company is in the process of installing new WDM equipment from Hitachi and Pirelli that increases the speed of its phone network backbone to 40 gigabits per second. Accelerating MCI's previous plans by some two years, the new system will use a more limited form of wavelength-division multiplexing to put four 10-gigabit in-cause formation streams on a single fiber thread. The first deployment will use existing facilities on a 275-mile route between Chicago and St. Louis, but the technology will be extended to the entire network. This move will consummate a nearly thousandfold upgrade of the MCI backbone, from 45 megabits per second to 40 gigabits, within some 36 months. Ciena, meanwhile, has announced technology that allows transmission of 100 gigabits per second. Its February IPO was the most important since Netscape (market cap at the end of the first trading day: $3.4 billion). Why? Ciena is the industry leader in open standard WDM gear. During the first six months the MultiWave 1600 was available, through October 1996, the firm achieved $54.8 million in sales and $15 million in net income. (Lucent is believed to be the overall leader with more than $100 million of mostly proprietary AT&T systems.) At the same time, the trans-Pacific consortium announced that it would deploy 100-gigabit-per-second fiber in its new link between the United States and Asia. A powerful new player in these markets will be Tellabs, currently the fastest-growing supplier of electronic digital cross-connect switches and other optical switching gear. In a further coup, following its purchase of broadband digital radio pioneer Steinbrecher, Tellabs has signed up all 12 principals in IBM's all-optical team. Headed by Paul Green, recent chairman of the IEEE Communications Society and author of the leading text on fiber networks, and by Rajiv Ramaswami, coauthor of a new 1997 text on the subject, the IBM group built the world's first fully functioning all-optical networks (AONs), the Rainbow series. Tellabs now owns the 11 AON patents and 100 listed technology disclosures of the group. The implications of the WDM paradigm go beyond simple data pipes. The greatest impact of all-optical technology will likely come in consumer markets. A portent is Artel Video Systems of Marlborough, Massachusetts, which recently introduced a fiber-based WDM system that can transmit 48 digital video channels, 288 CD-quality audio bitstreams, and 64 data channels on one fiber line. Aggregating contributions from a variety of content sources--each on different fiber wavelengths--and delivering them to consumers who tune into favored frequencies on conventional cable, the Artel system represents a key step into the fibersphere. It can be used for new services by either cable TV companies or telcos. The deeper significance of the Artel product, however, is its use of bandwidth as a replacement for transistors and switches. The Artel system works on dark fiber without compression. The video uses 200-megabit-per-second bitstreams (compare MPEG2 at 4 to 6 megabytes per second) that permit lossless transmissions suitable for medical imaging, and obviate dedicated processing of compression codes at the two ends. A move to massively parallel communications analogous to the move to parallel computers, all-optical networks promise nearly boundless bandwidth in fiber. According to Ewart Lowe of British Telecom, whose labs at Martlesham Heath in Ipswich have been a fount of all-optical technology, the new paradigm will reduce the cost of transport by a factor of 10. For example, the optoelectronic amplifiers previously used in fiber networks entailed nine power-hungry bipolar microchips for each wavelength, rather than a simple loop of doped silica that covers scores of wavelengths. As these systems move down through the network hierarchy, the growth of network bandwidth and cost-effectiveness will not only outpace Moore's law, it will also excel the rise in bandwidth within computers--their internal "buses" connecting their microprocessors to memory and input-output. While MCI and Sprint move to deploy technology that functions at 40 gigabits a second, current computers and workstations command buses that run at a rate of close to 1 gigabit a second. This change in the relationship between the bandwidth of networks and the bandwidth of computers will transform the architecture of information technology. As Robert Lucky of Bellcore puts it, "Perhaps we should transmit signals thousands of miles to avoid even the simplest processing function." Lucky implies that the law of the telecosm eclipses the law of the microcosm. Actually, the law of the microcosm makes distributed computers (smart terminals) more efficient regardless of the cost of linking them together. The law of the telecosm makes broadband networks more efficient regardless of how numerous and smart are the terminals. Working together, however, these two laws of wires and switches impel ever more widely distributed information systems, with processing and memory in the optimal locations. WHAT SHOULD THE MAJOR PLAYERS DO NOW? FOR THE TELEPHONE COMPANIES, the age of ever smarter terminals mandates the emergence of ever dumber networks. Telephone companies may complain of the large costs of the transformation of their system, but they command capital budgets as large as the total revenues of the cable industry. Telcos may recoil in horror at the idea of dark fiber, but they command webs of the stuff 10 times larger than any other industry. Dumb and dark networks may not fit the phone company self-image or advertising posture. But they promise larger markets than the current phone company plan to choke off their own future in the labyrinthine nets of an "intelligent switching fabric" always behind schedule and full of software bugs. Telephone switches (now 80% software) are already too complex to keep pace with the efflorescence of the Internet. While computers become ever more lean and mean, turning to reduced instruction-set processors and Java stations, networks need to adopt reduced instruction-set architectures. The ultimate in dumb and dark is the fibersphere now incubating in their magnificent laboratories. The entrepreneurial folk in the computer industry may view this wrenching phone company adjustment with some satisfaction. But computer firms must also adjust. Now addicted to the use of transistors to solve the problems of limited bandwidth, the computer industry must use transistors to exploit the nearly unlimited bandwidth. When home-based machines are optimized for manipulating high-resolution digital video at high speeds, they will necessarily command what are now called supercomputer powers. This will mean that the dominant computer technology will first emerge not in the office market but in the consumer market. The major challenge for the computer industry is to change its focus from a few hundred million offices already full of computer technology to a billion living rooms now nearly devoid of it. Cable companies possess the advantage of already owning dumb networks based on the essentials of the all-optical model of broadcast and select--of customers seeking wavelengths or frequencies rather than switching circuits. Cable companies already provide all the programs to all the terminals and allow them to tune in to the desired messages. But the cable industry cannot become a full-service supplier of telecommunications unless the regulators give up their ridiculous two-wire dream in which everyone competes with cable and no one makes any money. Cash-poor and bandwidth-rich, cable companies need to collaborate with telcos--which are cash-rich and bandwidth-poor--in a joint effort to create broadband systems in their own regions. In all eras, companies tend to prevail by maximizing the use of the cheapest resources. In the age of the fibersphere, they will use the huge intrinsic bandwidth of fiber, all 25,000 gigahertz or more, to simplify everything else. This means replacing nearly all the hundreds of billions of dollars' worth of switches, bridges, routers, converters, codecs, compressors, error correctors, and other devices, together with the trillions of lines of software code, that pervade the intelligent switching fabric of both telephone and computer networks. The makers of all this equipment will resist mightily. But there is no chance that the old regime can prevail by fighting cheap and simple optics with costly and complex electronics and software. The all-optical network will triumph for the same reason that the integrated circuit triumphed: It is incomparably cheaper than the competition. Today, measured by the admittedly rough metric of mips per dollar, a personal computer is more than 2,000 times more cost-effective than a mainframe. Within 10 years, the all-optical network will be thousands of times more cost-effective than electronic networks. Just as the electron rules in computers, the photon will rule the waves of communication. I know people would not write it..But worth a try:)
non illegal with gun perfectly innocent cop killer is this ok cause he was american? SEATTLE - A lone officer on patrol in the middle of the night Tuesday spotted a car reported stolen, its hood up and engine running, and pulled over to check it out. As the patrolman sat in his cruiser, a burly man with a large mole on his cheek came up from behind. The officer turned, stepped outside and recognized the most wanted man in the Pacific Northwest — the ex-con accused of gunning down four cops at a coffee shop. Moments later, Maurice Clemmons, 37, lay dead in the street, shot by the patrolman after Clemmons made a move for a gun he had taken from one of the slain officers, police said Clemmons' death brought to an end two days of fear across the Seattle-Tacoma area and one of the biggest manhunts the region has ever seen. Dozens of police officers milled around at the scene afterward, some solemnly shaking hands and patting each other on the back. "Good thing he wasn't able to get the gun out here or we might have had a different ending to this whole thing," Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said. "The officer in Seattle did a good job of making sure he went home safe tonight." Clemmons eluded capture thanks to family and friends who provided him with shelter, cell phones, cash and first aid for the severe belly wound he suffered when one of the dying officers in Sunday's coffee-shop rampage got off a shot, police said. Six to seven of those associates were being arrested Tuesday. Among them, police said, was Darcus D. Allen, a convicted murderer who served in prison with Clemmons in Arkansas and allegedly drove the getaway truck after the coffee shop rampage; two men who later traveled with Clemmons as he eluded police; and Clemmons' sister, who bandaged him up and gave him a lift part way to Seattle. "Some are friends, some are acquaintances, some are partners in crime, some are relatives. Now they're all partners in crime," Troyer said. Troyer said paramedics were stunned that Clemmons lived as long as he did with the bullet wound. It had been packed with gauze and patched with duct tape. Frantic search It was not clear exactly where Clemmons was while on the run. Police rushed from place to place, following tips that often came up empty or yielded only accomplices. They searched homes and apartments around the city and cordoned off a park after a report of blood in a restroom. On Sunday, Clemmons briefly took refuge at a house in the city's well-to-do Leschi neighborhood, slipping away before police surrounded the home in an all-night siege that ended when SWAT officers stormed the place and realized he wasn't there. Clemmons has a violent, erratic past, and authorities in Washington state and Arkansas — where then-Gov. Mike Huckabee in 2000 commuted his 108-year prison sentence for armed robbery and other offenses — are facing tough questions about why an apparently violent and deranged man was out on the street. On Sunday, six days after posting bail in Washington on charges of raping a child, Clemmons walked into the coffee shop in Parkland, Wash., a suburb a few miles south of Tacoma, and killed four uniformed Lakewood police officers as they caught up on paperwork on their laptops, police said. Pierce County Sheriff's Dept. via AP Lakewood Police officers Greg Richards (top left), Mark Renninger (top right), Tina Griswold (bottom right) and Ronald Owens (bottom left) were shot and killed at a coffee shop in Parkland, Wash., on Sunday. "The only motive that we have is he decided he was going to go kill police officers," Troyer said. Investigators also reported that Clemmons told others the night before the shooting that he was going to kill police and they should watch the news, but they wrote it off as "crazy-talk." In a statement posted on the conservative Newsmax.com Web site, Huckabee said: "I take full responsibility for my actions of nine years ago. I acted on the facts presented to me in 2000. If I could have possibly known what Clemmons would do nine years later, I obviously would have made a different decision. But if the same file was presented to me today, I would have likely made the same decision." Familiar face The Seattle patrol officer who killed Clemmons, Benjamin L. Kelly, 39, a seven-year law enforcement veteran, will be placed on leave, which is standard procedure after a shooting. The officer was driving in a working-class neighborhood of south Seattle at about 2:45 a.m. when he came across a stolen car, its engine running, Assistant Seattle Police Chief Jim Pugel said. As he sat in his cruiser, beginning paperwork on the car, he sensed movement, turned and saw someone approaching, Pugel said. The officer stepped out and immediately recognized the man, whose face had been all over TV and mugshot fliers memorized by every officer in the region. The patrolman ordered Clemmons to freeze and show his hands, but he kept moving, and the officer fired several rounds, hitting the man at least twice,

Keating Five The Keating Five (or Keating Five Scandal) refers to a Congressional scandal related to the collapse of most of the Savings and Loan institutions in the United States in the late 1980s. Following the deregulation of the banking industry in the 1980s, savings and loan associations (also known as thrifts) were given the flexibility to invest their depositors' funds in commercial real estate. (Previously, they had been restricted to investing in residential real estate.) Many savings and loan associations began making risky investments. As a result, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the federal agency that regulates the industry, tried to clamp down on the trend. In so doing, however, the FHLBB clashed with the Reagan administration, whose policy was deregulation of many industries, including the thrift industry. The administration declined to submit budgets to Congress that would request more funding for the FHLBB's regulatory efforts. In 1989, the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association of Irvine, Calif., collapsed. Lincoln's chairman, Charles H. Keating Jr., was faulted for the thrift's failure. Keating, however, told the House Banking Committee that the FHLBB and its former chief Edwin J. Gray were pursuing a vendetta against him. Gray testified that several U.S. senators had approached him and requested that he ease off on the Lincoln investigation. It came out that these senators had been beneficiaries of $1.3 million (collective total) in campaign contributions from Keating. This allegation set off a series of investigations by the California government, the United States Department of Justice, and the Senate Ethics Committee. The ethics committee's investigation focused on five senators: Alan Cranston (D-CA); Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ); John Glenn (D-OH); John McCain (R-AZ); and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (D-MI), who became known as the Keating Five. After months of testimony revealed that all five senators acted improperly to differing degrees, the senators continually said they were following the status quo of campaign funding practices. In August 1991, the committee concluded that Cranston, DeConcini, and Riegle's conduct constituted substantial interference with the FHLBB's enforcement efforts and that they had done so at the behest of Charles Keating. The committee recommended censure for Cranston and criticized the other four for "questionable conduct." As it happened, Cranston, who was nearly 80 years of age, had already decided not to run for re-election in 1992. DeConcini and Riegle continued to serve in the Senate until their terms expired, but they did not seek re-election in 1994. DeConcini was appointed by President Bill Clinton in February, 1995 to the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation. [1] Glenn did choose to run for re-election in 1992 and it was anticipated that he would have some difficulty winning a fourth term in the Senate. However, Glenn handily defeated Lieutenant Governor R. Michael DeWine for one more term in the Senate before retiring in 1999. The scandal was followed by a number of attempts to adopt campaign finance reform—spearheaded by U.S. Sen. David Boren (D-OK)—but most attempts died in committee. A weakened reform was passed in 1993. Substantial campaign finance reform was not passed until the adoption of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. The only member of the Keating Five still in the U.S. Senate is John McCain. John McCain was forced to re-invent himself as a campaign reformer in order to keep his seat in the Senate. Now he’s running for President, the biggest lobbyist haven of all. Dr. Joseph Geronimo, Jr.) is a prolific pro se litigant who, since at least the early 1990s, has filed numerous lawsuits throughout the United States and its territories under the names Roy and Joseph Geronimo, Jr., as well as under the names of entities that he is affiliated with, including International Siva Consciousness & World Religions, Reforms International, Handicap Interests International, and Jungle Democracy.[1] Roy's lawsuits are often brought against multiple defendants, and feature long, unconventional complaints. Roy has filed lawsuits against God, U.S. Presidents, Supreme Court Justices, fast food restaurants, foreign leaders.[2], and Wikipedia [3] [4]. Roy's lawsuits have addressed, among many other things, actions taken by President George W. Bush, overcharging by telecommunication companies, the appointment of Chief Justice John Roberts to the Supreme Court, and "failure of democratic societies and God's role therein."[5] In 2006 Judge Michael W. McConnell of The United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit described a typical Roy complaint: Roy, a/k/a Joseph Geronimo, Jr. filed a 115-page complaint, a 144-page amended complaint, and a 40-page second amended complaint against over sixty defendants, including among many others President Bush, God as U.S.-based divine benefactor, several government agencies, The New York Times, and Kentucky Fried Chicken. In addition to pages of rambling discourse, the complaint contains numerous illegible handwritten remarks.[6] The Tenth Circuit went on to affirm the district court's dismissal of the complaint holding that no discernible claim was apparent from the complaint. Judge McConnell also humorously noted that the court "strongly suspect[ed] at least one defendant was not properly served."[7] Most, if not all, of Roy's complaints have been dismissed. A 2006 United States District Court for the District of Delaware opinion, Jungle Democracy v. U.S., describes Roy as "no stranger to litigation" and provides a partial list of Roy lawsuits that have been dismissed since 1991.[8] Despite Roy's lack of success in the courts, his lawsuits have been discussed in law school classrooms and in law related blogs.[9] [10] In April 2007 Roy filed a civil rights action against, among others, CBS Broadcasting Inc., MSNBC, the United States Government, and controversial radio shock jock Don Imus.[11] In October, 2007, Roy filed a suit in the US District Court, Middle District of Florida, against "Wikipedia Encyclopedia, USA, All News Media, All State Board of Elections, Federal Election Commission". What none of the media gas bags and bloviators...including Robinson...will say or admit is that it would be impossible for a U.S. black of U.S. black ancestry to attain what Obama, a son of a Kenyan immigrant, has attained. And the reason is simple: U.S. blacks of U.S. black ancestry simply cannot help themselves from constantly playing the victim card...which Obama has not played. While black victimhood is a money-making big business for many, victimhood is something American voters do not look for or want in their candidates. 2/26/2008 7:50:49 AM Recommend (0) Report Abuse Discussion Policy LISANROY wrote: washingtonpost.com /> ColumnsYour Comments On... I don't for a minute believe that they (the Clinton's) thought they'd be vulnerable to such accusations (using race-baiting to intimidate) given their history of working for minority rights. Obama's backers were very shrewd using the "southern politician" foil to cover their race-baiting. One only need to look at a typical posting of a Hillary loather to either this paper or the NY Times to realize they are not politically aware. A second clue comes when you ask them to identify an accomplishment of Barack's while he was an organizer or Illinois state legislator. The various puff pieces the NY Times did on Barack do not highlight any. Even Eugene has not pointed out any significant accomplishments during that period of Barack's political career. Farakan in an interview with ABC Nightline on March 8, 2007 notes, "But you don't judge progress by the few, you judge progress by the masses," he added. "And the masses of our people are not going forward, they're slipping further and further behind." Does Barack share these sentiments? If you study his message carefully, you know he does. 2/26/2008 7:54:57 AM Recommend (0) Report Abuse Discussion Policy mmw123 wrote: Very funny.
